Samsung Unveils Rollable Display That Unfurls Itself Like A Script

When it comes to foldable displays, Samsung might currently be at the forefront of the market, with its Fold and Flip phones taking up the top spot in an otherwise niche sector.
Folding screens fit into a portion of the tech world where brands try to find a new way to set themselves apart. But now that Samsung has nearly gotten the whole folding tech thing down, it’s moving onto the realm of rollable gadgets. A new prototype from its Samsung Display division unveils a new device that can be unrolled like an old-timey scroll.
‘Rollable Flex’ uses an O-shaped axis from whith a rolled-up display of 49mm (1.93 inches). It can then unfurl itself into a 254.4mm (12.4 inches) screen with an FHD+ resolution, essentially 1,200 by 1,920 pixels.
The video below shows what it looks like in action so you can get a better idea of it.
So why would you need a high-tech scroll to carry around with you? Presumably, this new area of display advancements is in a bid to find ways to make bulky laptops and even monitors a little more transportable. And, frankly, it’d be pretty cool to roll away your devices once you’re done.
Rollable Flex was first announced at the SID Display Week 2023 in Los Angeles among another prototype device called the Sensor OLED, which allows fingerprints to be scanned from anywhere on a device’s screen.
