It’s no secret that foldable phones are back with a vengeance. Motorola, the maker of the original clamshell phone, is dialing up the competition against electronics giant Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip and Fold series’ with its latest installment, the razr+.

At first glance, this new version is already heating up the mood with a model wrapped in PANTONE’s 2023 color of the year, Viva Magenta, a hue representative of self-expression.

However, perhaps the new clamshell smartphone’s most significant upgrade lies on its exterior. It has revamped its front with a more generous display, blowing Samsung Flip 4’s 1.9-inch screen out of the water with a 3.6-inch one instead.

That alone gives it extra brownie points, as users can now access more of their device without opening them up. No longer will you be confined to reading just one text message when it is closed. Now, more apps for messaging, weather, and even games can be put on view.

Regarding its photo-taking capabilities, the days of bad front-facing camera selfies and awkwardly re-angled pictures are now behind us. The larger screen offers a chance for people to take better images of themselves with a 64 MP camera.

When flipped up to its full length, the device stands at 6.9 inches and comes with a POLED display with a 165 Hz refresh rate powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip.

It has dual surround speakers, and a 32 MP punch-hole front-facing camera, which will probably only get used for video calls since taking selfies can now be done with the primary camera. In addition, it has an in-display finger sensor and is IP52 dust and water-resistant.

One area these folding phones lose out to specced-out chocolate bar devices is the battery. These smartphones usually split their batteries to power up the top and bottom halves. The razr+ has a 3,800mAh battery that could drain down pretty fast through the day, especially if you need it to do a lot of heavy lifting.

The razr+ also comes in Infinite Black and Glacier Blue if magenta isn’t your thing. Sales begin on June 23, and it will retail for US$999.99.
