Funko Will Let You Create A Personalized Vinyl Figurine Of Yourself
By Mikelle Leow, 14 Jun 2023
For years, toy collectors have been sharing their space with wide-eyed Funko Pop versions of their favorite pop-culture characters. Very soon, though, they’ll also be able to make room for themselves—or rather, their mini-mes.
Expanding from its diverse cache of movie, series, and video-game icons, Funko is representing fans too, and will soon open up customizations for collectors and their loved ones.
The service, called ‘Pop! Yourself’, actually launched in late 2020, but it has thus far operated on a small scale in Funko’s locations at its Washington headquarters and in Hollywood. However, as announced at its licensing expo summit in Las Vegas on Monday, the brand is now rolling out the option to the masses, in time for its 25th anniversary.
Pop! Yourself has been a “hidden gem” over the past two years, shared Dave Bere, vice president of brand and marketing at Funko, in a statement published by the Hollywood Reporter. The DIY program has, in fact, been the number-one product at its stores and accounted for one-fifth of their sales, he added. Its popularity propelled Funko to take this personal experience online for fans around the world.
Customers can build their own Funko Pops by choosing from a selection of skin tones, clothing, eyewear, and accessories like a bouquet of roses or a to-go coffee cup. As CEO Brian Mariotti puts it, the service is “pop culture customized for you.”
In time, fans will also be able to pull from items and motifs inspired by franchises from Funko’s licensing partners, so they can dress their vinyl doubles up as their favorite pop-culture characters.
Each Pop! Yourself figurine will be priced at US$30, and the option to create one will be available in the third quarter of this year through the Funko website, or at the usual Funko Everett and Funko Hollywood locations.
