Belgian Bank Designs The First Three-Sided Coin To Put Its Money On The Earth

Heads or tails? What if there were another option?
When it comes to money sense, Belgian bank Vdk is urging customers to “triple their thinking” and returns, not only considering gains for themselves, but also the community and the planet.
“They often say that money has two sides. Heads versus tails, bull versus bear, profit versus loss,” notes copywriter Barbara Dzikanowice. “We asked ourselves: what if money had three sides, with the third side representing the impact your money can have on society and the planet?”
Turning this idea into gold, the ethical and sustainable bank, along with purpose-driven communication agency Bonka Circus, has created the first three-sided coin, with permission by the National Bank of Belgium and the European Central Bank.
With models rendered by 3D studio ppuntt and molds created by milling experts Wimba and Frecon Industries, gold and silver smiths crafted the coins, then polished and gilded them in a gold bath. The sides, which were added later, gave the coin a feel similar to holding a ring.
Although stamped with a one-euro design on one face, the 3D coin has no monetary value, which helped convince the authorities to approve the project.
Not just a shiny thing to admire, the coin now serves as a “talking device” with customers, and is accompanied by a booklet detailing how sustainable and ethical banking is a possibility.
