Can you make a gaming device you’ll treasure above all else? Microsoft says game on.
The company has enlisted master jade craftsman Andy Chi to construct an Xbox controller from the precious stone—and he has delivered, though not without some frustrations. The gadget is created to celebrate Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty arriving for the Xbox.
In this role-playing adventure set in an era inspired by the Han Dynasty, the player is handed a magical jade talisman that summons a divine beast to aid in combat. Needless to say, jade is of high importance in the game.
Xbox honors “the power of jade” both in-game and in real life with the help of Chi, who taps into his deep familiarity with the gem to craft this one-of-a-kind controller. As a bonus, the end product is Xbox green!

After examining blocks of the delicate material for the right internal structure, hue, and texture to ensure a comfortable grip that doesn’t hinder gameplay, the Chinese artisan devises to split up the controller’s shell into eight parts.
Alas, after nearly a week of hard work, Chi finds multiple cracks in the pieces, forcing him to start again.
When gamers are locked in the zone, they likely won’t remember to be gentle with their controllers. Chi accommodates rough usage by protecting the controls with a plastic ring to limit friction and shock.
“When you press these directional buttons, we ensured the buttons do not come into contact with jade,” explains Chi in a promotional video. “But, instead, come into contact with plastic, so that it will not damage the jade during prolonged gameplay.”

X marks the spot of this treasure!
The whole project is challenging but rewarding. “If I can make a very exquisite jade product as a jade worker, and people will preserve it for a long time or permanently, I could think of nothing to be prouder of,” expresses the craftsman.

With that said, the gadget isn’t available for sale. Just like the adventure game, it’s a fantasy.
Regardless, you can still watch the fascinating making of the controller below.
