BMW’s New Motorcycle Smart-Glasses Project Dashboard Metrics Before Your Eyes
For drivers navigating busy highways, it’s pertinent for them to be able to access important information without having to take their eyes off the road. Now, motorcycle riders can do just that with BMW’s all-new ConnectedRide Smartglasses.
Reminiscent of regular sunglasses—only bulkier—the gadget was designed by BMW Motorrad, the bike arm of the famed German automaker. It works just like the heads-up display available in the brand’s four-wheelers by projecting a rider’s navigation, speed, and gears right onto the lens.
Instead of having to look down onto the motorcyle’s dashboard, riders can now easily access necessary information about their vehicle at eye level, allowing them to keep their attention trained on the road.
Interestingly, how the data is positioned on the lens can be adjusted according to each driver’s needs and only requires a Bluetooth connection to pair with a smartphone and the accompanying BMW Motorrad Connected application.
Bikers can choose from two sizes (medium or large) to get the perfect fit, with the smart glasses specifically designed to sit comfortably with a variety of riders’ helmets. In addition, there’s the option to pick between two different sets of lenses.
One, which is 85% transparent, is designed to be used under helmets that already have integrated sun visors, while the other is tinted to shield eyes from strong sunlight. Both lenses are UVA/UVB certified and can be made to fit with one’s prescription.
As for the device’s battery life, its lithium-ion battery is said to last for up to 10 hours on a single charge. The projections work in temperatures from as low as 14 °F to as high as 122 °F, so riders won’t have to worry about harsh summers or winters.
