In 1974, Hyundai Motor introduced its first concept car, the Pony—a distinctive sedan with a wedge-shaped front end skillfully designed by Goigetto Giugiaro. This compact, rear-wheel drive automobile drew inspiration from the art of origami. Despite not entering production until 1976, the Pony’s debut marked a significant and inspirational milestone for the company in the aftermath of post-war Korea.
Now, to honor this pivotal moment in the brand’s history, a special heritage project centered around the Pony has emerged.
Hyundai has tapped South Korean indie rock band Jannabi to serve as an ambassador for this project with a collaborative song titled Pony. The narrative revolves around the lead singer, Junghoon Choi, reminiscing about his childhood memories while his mother played music during their drives together.
While Choi’s sentimental journey and his love for music form the core of the video’s storyline, the spotlight shines on the Pony1 model cruising through the streets of a retro-inspired Seoul. Additionally, the video showcases the IONIQ 5 electric vehicle, symbolizing the passage of time between the first Pony and the latest Hyundai models it came to inspire.
The celebration of Hyundai’s heritage commenced in May at the Villa Pliniana in Lake Como, where a meticulously reconstructed version of the original Pony Coupe made its grand debut. Jannabi will perform a concert at the Hyundai Motorstudio Seoul on July 22 to commemorate this milestone, enthralling the audience with their eponymous song.
