Sony Debuts Handheld Gaming Device, The ‘PlayStation Portal’
Sony has introduced the PlayStation Portal, a handheld gaming device that puts your PS5 into the palm of your hand.
This isn’t Sony’s first foray into handheld gaming. For those that remember, in 2005, it debuted the PlayStation Portable, or PSP, and later in 2011, the PSP Vita. While the devices looked promising and held up against Nintendo’s Gameboy and DS range, they faded into the shadows of the gaming sphere. Now, the concept is back again, but with a twist.
The Portal will not be housing any specially made games, but instead, it will utilize PlayStation’s Remote Play feature, so essentially, you’ll be able to stream your PS5 games directly onto it.
This device mirrors the features and ergonomics of the PS5’s DualSense controller, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchpad.
In terms of design, the PlayStation Portal resembles a half-section of the DualSense controller attached to an eight-inch, 1080p LCD. Surprisingly, it’s lighter than competitors like the Nintendo Switch and Valve’s Steam Deck, offering a roomy screen and full-size controls.
The PlayStation Portal offers a gaming experience akin to the PS5 on its eight-inch 60Hz LCD screen and 1080p resolution. Although, specific brightness, color gamut, and HDR specifications are undisclosed.
And, as it streams games from your PS5, you’ll have access to your account, achievements, trophies, and the main home screen so you can pick up from where you left off while on the go. You’ll also have access to your Spotify, YouTube, Netflix, and other non-gaming apps.
However, a strong Wi-Fi connection on both ends is crucial for optimal performance, and if connectivity falters or someone else uses the PS5, the Portal won’t function.
Audio options include a 3.5mm headphone jack and built-in speakers, as it lacks Bluetooth for wireless headphones. It also features PlayStation Link, Sony’s proprietary standard for PlayStation devices.
At this point, the idea behind the Portal is to give those who share a television screen or monitor with others and those who are constantly on the move a more accessible way to play their favorite games.
The Portal is priced at US$199.99 and shipping will start later this year.
