With 11 players on each side vying for a single ball, the game of soccer may appear to be perfectly equal on the surface. However, for female players, things aren’t always fair.
Riding on the hype of the recently concluded Women’s World Cup, German insurance firm Allianz has come up with the idea of The Squared Ball—a “physics-defying” iteration of the sport’s key component to highlight the financial obstacles women face in their careers.
The unusual ball, which was developed in partnership with creative agency Edelman and sportswear manufacturer Rasenreich, comprises nine different layers that display various facts and numbers about the struggles female athletes face when it comes to playing soccer professionally.
Unwilling to just leave the idea as a concept, the company has brought the nonspherical object to life, with FC Bayern testing and displaying the prototype during this season’s kick-off event.
