It seems as though there’s no end to the Barbie hype. Warner Bros recently announced Greta Gerwig’s film has passed the US$1.34 billion mark at the global box office, officially becoming the studio’s highest-grossing film in its legacy.
Previously, thetitle was held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part 2, which premiered in theaters all the way back in 2011. It doesn’t stop there; on August 16, 2023, the movie based on the famed fashion doll surged beyond Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight as the company’s largest offering in North America.
According toThe Hollywood Reporter, Margot Robbie’s titular character is on track to pass Super Mario Bros global high of US$1.36 billion soon, which would make it the top film of the year thus far. In fact, this milestone would earn Barbie the number 15 spot on the list of top-grossing movies in history.
Warner Bros Motion Picture Group co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy said that the unbridled success of the picture was “a reminder of the power of moviegoers” all over the world in celebration of “an iconic character that has entertained us for so many decades.”
