Microsoft Paint Takes On Canva & Photoshop With One-Click Background Removal

If there’s one image editor nearly everyone (creative or not) is familiar with, it’s Microsoft Paint. And surprisingly, the application—unlike Internet Explorer, which has since kicked the bucket—seems to be making headlines these days.

In the most recent development, the technology giant has introduced a background removal tool to the program, similar to the one found in Photoshop or Canva.

According to PetaPixel, this update is rolling out to users who’ve signed up for the Windows Insider Program in the Canary and Dev Channels.

Similar to other background removal tools, the function will allow users to select and isolate the main subject of a picture so the rest of the background can be removed in just one click.

The feature will appear alongside the rest of the application’s options on the toolbar.

At the moment, the newly added aid isn’t labeled but can be identified from its icon depicting diagonal lines behind a person’s silhouette.

As to whether Microsoft Paint would soon be competent enough to give Adobe a run for its money, the full picture is yet to be seen. But unlike this removal feature, the more options there are in the background, the better.
