Leica Debuts Watches That Tap Light & Shadow To Offer First-Of-Its-Kind Gradient

In April, Leica unveiled minimalistic black and white timepieces inspired by its M11 Monochrom camera. Now, the brand is back with an addition to the lineup: the Leica ZM 11 watch.

Designed in collaboration with Swiss movement developer Chronode, the wristwatch boasts the automatic Leica Caliber LA-3001.

This Swiss-made technology promises an astonishing accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day and an impressive 60 hours of runtime.

In fact, the watch is meticulously measured in five positions and adorned with 35 jewels, showcasing the duo’s attention to detail.

The intricate sandblasting, brushing, and polishing techniques used in the movement are reminiscent of the finishes found in the previous models.

Encased in a 10 ATM water-resistant titanium or stainless steel shell measuring 41 mm, the Leica ZM 11 encapsulates the signature aesthetics of Leica design over the past 150 years.

One of the core features is the timepiece’s unique dial. This dual-layered dial is more than just a watch face; it’s a canvas where light and shadow collaborate to create a sense of depth.

Intriguingly, it can transition from a sleek black to a vibrant red, depending on the viewer’s perspective. This gradient effect is achieved through precise mechanical craftsmanship, not mere printed visuals.

The brushed indexes with polished edges are filled with luminous material, ensuring high visibility in any lighting condition. In addition, the hands are a testament to fine craftsmanship with their diamond-cut, softly faceted surfaces that catch and reflect light beautifully.

For added convenience, the Leica ZM 11 comes with the Leica Easy Change system. This mechanism, reminiscent of the lens release button on a Leica camera, allows wearers to change the watch’s appearance effortlessly.

With just a simple press of the red dot, one can switch between titanium and stainless steel, vulcanized rubber, or durable fabric watch straps. Each strap is designed with comfort and aesthetics in mind.

Collectors can opt for the Titanium Launch Edition with a black and red dial, limited to 250 watches; the Titanium Coffee Black featuring a warm-black dial; or the Steel Midnight Blue with a blue and black dial, starting from US$6,775.

These exquisite items will be available at select Leica stores worldwide, including the USA, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, and more, starting from the end of November.
