Burger King is summoning ghost peppers this Halloween, and it’s creeping up on you with this information with a camp short overseen by renowned director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon.
The Call, a spooky 60-second spot crafted by the chain’s brand agency Dentsu Creative, conjures up some familiar tropes, like the car from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The commercial was also filmed on the set of Jeepers Creepers, according to Muse by Clio.
Set to a haunting rendition of the Whopper jingle, it follows a woman who receives an ominous call that drives her to get out of her house. Suddenly, her car radio bellows, “You can’t run from the heat.”
Gomez-Rejon’s involvement is a compelling draw, as he was nominated for an Emmy for his work on American Horror Story: Coven. Expressing his excitement, Gomez-Rejon revealed in a press release that he “had a blast revisiting the genre” from his days with AHS and “jumped at the chance” because he enjoyed short films too.

This season marks the return of the Ghost Pepper Whopper, first introduced last year. The zinged-up burger features a toasted orange bun with black sesame seeds that’s filled with spicy queso, ghost pepper cheese, bacon, and jalapeños. And this time, it’s bringing a ghoulish sidekick: Ghost Pepper Chicken Fries.
The companion short is also slated to appear in movie theaters, a slight allusion to its cinematic themes.
Not everybody wants to live in a horror movie, but if you’d like to dabble in this fantasy, you can volunteer to receive one of these sinister calls by providing your name and phone number on TheCall.BK.com.
In closely related news, Jack in the Box has released its own horror film produced by writers of American Horror Story: 1984, Servant, and the Saw franchise.
