Instagram Teases Experimental Feature To Cut Out Posts Into Custom Stickers

Instagram is in the process of experimenting with some new features that may pique the interest of its users, among which is the ability to fashion custom stickers using their own photos.
In a recent video on his broadcast channel, Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, showed how this feature works. It involves the tool recognizing the primary subject of a photo and then removing the background to create a stand-alone sticker.
From Mosseri’s demonstration, it seems like the new update will be found under the same section where you get stickers and GIFs for stories. There, it looks like there will be a ‘create’ button, which will pull up your gallery for you to select an image you would like to turn into a sticker.
Furthermore, Instagram intends to expand this functionality to “eligible images” users come across while scrolling through their feeds. While not much else is known about what this entails, it seems that users might be able opt-in to allow others to use their posts and turn them into stickers as well.
Engadget pointed out that Meta is pushing for a larger AI-infused sticker movement on its platforms. However, this seems like a simpler approach and follows the same technology as in Apple’s photo cut-out feature.
It’s also worth noting that this feature is still in the testing phase and has not been made available to all users at this point. That said, the prospect of transforming yourself into a reaction meme is right on the horizon.
