MINI might be known to go down some unexpected routes with its rather experimental concepts, but its latest design project might be its most colorful yet. And get this—it was spearheaded by a nine-year-old.
Oliver Gorrod from Oxfordshire, England, prevailed as the winner of the aptly-named MINI Minds design competition, a collaborative effort between the BMW-owned automaker and Crayola. This challenge, drawing the imagination of kids aged four to 10 in the UK, encouraged them to envision the “car of the future.”

Oliver’s concept revolves around nature and environmental consciousness. He explains, “I like the idea of all cars being electric, as they are better for the environment, animals, and the planet.”
In spite of its vivid hues, the livery is meant to be “camouflage, so it blends into natural environments,” the boy elaborates.

The MINI Minds…with Crayola competition provided a platform for young talents to express their imaginative ideas for the future of automobiles. In a world increasingly dominated by electric vehicles, the entries showed that more than 25% of the young participants want cars that are environmentally friendly to help protect the planet.
For his triumph, Oliver’s design will be turned into reality using a vinyl wrap on a MINI Electric car.

Additionally, he receives a substantial bundle of Crayola art materials for himself and his school. As a bonus, Oliver will be invited to MINI Plant Oxford for a private tour, providing him with a firsthand look at how the MINI Electric is manufactured.

Federico Izzo, director of MINI UK & Ireland, praises the boundless imagination of children and the optimistic ideas young participants have presented.
“We had entries which focused on being better for animals, boosting the mood of those around them, helping save the bees and plenty with a focus on sustainability—the creativity of the designs were fantastic,” Izzo notes. “We are excited to bring Oliver’s design to life and hope he will continue to innovate and dream big in the future.”
Jade Childs, marketing controller at Crayola, expresses delight in seeing the vibrant originality and individuality of the children’s designs.
“Crayola is passionate about helping to raise creatively inspired children and seeing all the wonderful entries into the competition really demonstrated the children’s colorful originality and self-expression that, at Crayola’s core, we are all about unleashing,” Childs comments.
“We are delighted to share Crayola art materials with Oliver and his class… and we hope they will continue to be inspired and express themselves as they explore, discover, play, pretend, and dream.”
