Sesame Street’s resident giant, Big Bird, has found himself in a large—or small, depending if you’re a glass-half-full person—predicament that’s stirring both curiosity and concern.
On the character’s official Twitter/X account, the towering character has revealed that he has shrunk to a size smaller than a paperclip. The story took flight on January 24, with the new little Big Bird questioning his identity now that he’s no longer big.
“Day two of being tiny. Does this mean that I am now just, ‘Bird’?” the character pondered. “Has anyone figured how to help me?”
Interestingly, this narrative isn’t entirely new but rather a creative retelling of a 2005 Sesame Street episode titled The Adventures Of Little Big Bird, Part 1. In this storyline, Big Bird becomes small due to a spell gone awry by the Amazing Mumford, Sesame Street’s magician. While initially enjoying the novel viewpoint, the tiny bird soon misses his friends, who struggle to hear him, prompting a quest to reverse the spell.
On social media, the tale has taken on a life of its own, with other characters from Sesame Street chiming in with support. Elmo has made wishes for Big Bird’s return to his original size, while Bert enlisted Ernie’s help with a microscope to see their miniature friend.
Those who grew up learning the alphabet from Sesame Street are understandably worried, as well. “It’s honestly very, very upsetting,” one fan laments.
“Why is no one helping? You have a literal fairy there,” another responds, referring to the character Abby Cadabby. “It’s stressing me out. Help your friend.”
As of the time of writing, it’s day six of Big Bird being tiny, and he still hasn’t returned to his usual 8’2” form.
Still, he remains chirpy, buoyed by the support of fans and new friends on Sesame Street, including one friendly bug who gave him a ride home. “Even though it might be hard to see me right now, I’ve felt seen by all of you,” he shared.
