The United States Postal Service (USPS) is gearing up to honor the legendary photographer Ansel Adams with a special series of stamps, celebrating his profound impact on photography and environmental conservation.
Adams, whose striking black-and-white images of the American West continue to fascinate, is also remembered for his dedication to preserving the grandeur of natural landscapes he so beautifully captured—from Yosemite National Park to Sequoia National Park. This stamp series is a nod to his legacy, bringing his iconic views of nature’s majesty right into the hands of the public.
The USPS, with its tradition of commemorating America’s cultural and natural heritage, finds a fitting subject in Adams, whose work has played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the beauty and vulnerability of the American wilderness. The collection will feature 16 stamps, rendered in his celebrated “straight photography” style, offering a window into the photographer's profound connection with the environment. Art director Derry Noyes has skillfully adapted Adams’s expansive scenes to the compact canvas of a postage stamp, allowing these miniature masterpieces to carry forward a meaningful message of protection through the postal system.
This philatelic tribute that’s black, white, and green all over does more than just celebrate the photographer’s artistic contributions; it serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural yet vulnerable beauty that defines the American landscape. As these stamps circulate, they invite the public to engage with Adams’s craft in a novel way, fostering a collective appreciation for the natural world that surrounds us.
The Ansel Adams forever stamps, available from May 15, are part of the USPS’s broader 2024 rollout, which includes space imagery captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and illustrations reminding the general public to protect sea turtles and manatees.
