London woke up to a splash of green, quite literally. A mysterious mural has appeared on the side of a building near Finsbury Park, with Banksy officially confirming his involvement on Instagram.
The artwork features a real, bare tree standing awkwardly in front of a burst of vibrant green paint, cleverly mimicking a full canopy. Look closer, and you’ll see a stenciled figure wielding a pressure washer next to the subject.
Although his post comes without a caption, this playful (and perhaps pointed) 3D addition hints at a deeper message. Is Banksy commenting on the struggle of nature to survive in the urban jungle? The bright paint, possibly applied with a fire extinguisher for added impact, stands in stark contrast to the bleak winter branches, highlighting the artificiality of this urban “foliage.”
This isn’t the first time Banksy has used art to spark environmental conversations. The anonymous artist is known for his social and political commentary, often delivered with a healthy dose of humor. This piece is no different. It invites viewers to question our relationship with the natural world, particularly in concrete jungles like London. The fire extinguisher paint application feels almost urgent, a call to action to protect the environment before it’s just a facade.
