Samsung, the South Korean titan of consumer electronics, has outlined its bold new design philosophy that will shape the future of its products. The brand will demonstrate some nuances of this renewal at Milan Design Week 2024.
Since 1996, the company’s design ethos has been rooted in the mantra: “Inspired by Humans, Creating the Future.” However, as lifestyles evolve, so must design. The long-standing pillar remains, but on Thursday, TM Roh—Samsung’s president and head of mobile communications business—unveiled version 5.0 of the Samsung Design Identity (DI 5.0) to lead designers in the road ahead: “Essential • Innovative • Harmonious.”
Essential • Innovative • Harmonious will be the compass guiding the tech giant and its more than 1,500 global designers serving unique everyday problems toward 2030.
“If we look more closely at the product development process, design makes innovative technologies shine while technology makes design dreams a reality,” explained Roh. “Only when design and technology are in perfect harmony can we develop a product that provides genuine value to our users. Samsung Electronics excels at balancing design with innovative technology, and we continually strive to create products that blend seamlessly into our customers’ lives. To this end, we have redefined our design philosophy.”
With Essential design, Samsung goes back to basics with a human focus, acknowledging the ever-growing complexity of modern life. To this end, it aims to create products that are streamlined and purposeful. This translates to a focus on intuitive interfaces, clutter-free aesthetics, and features that directly address user needs.
Take the latestGalaxy S24 series: its unified look and thin bezel allow users to intuitively experience mobile functions. As for Samsung’s televisions, they seem to float mid-air with their Infinity Air Design.
Innovative
While prioritizing simplicity, Samsung isn’t shying away from groundbreaking advancements. Its refined design goals leave room for cutting-edge features and functionalities. Customers can expect to see seamless integration with artificial intelligence, sustainable materials, and a continued exploration of foldable and flexible displays.
“Examples include a TV that automatically upscales low-resolution images to 8K level using AI technology, an AI-based robot vacuum cleaner that automatically recognizes floor type, objects and living spaces for optimal cleaning, and a Live Translate feature that helps smartphone users overcome language barriers through real-time translation. These products all merge innovation with creativity,” Roh details.
Harmonious is the sweet spot where design, technology, and life meet. The South Korean giant envisions technology not as separate, but an integrated part of our lives. The future lies in products that blend into the day to day, enhancing experiences without fuss.
“Designs that create harmony between products and customers’ daily lives—rather than designs that announce their own existence—are the kind we will continue to pursue,” Roh elaborated, citing the SmartThings app that allows users to control their devices remotely and the Music Frame speaker, shaped like a picture frame, that “blends into any interior.”
Samsung’s vision for 2030 paints a picture of a future where technology empowers us, simplifies our lives, and complements the human experience.
“This is our commitment—to be faithful to our essential purpose, innovate endlessly and create designs that harmonize with our users’ lives,” Roh expressed. “We aim to empower customers around the globe and enrich their lives by offering meaningful experiences, no matter what Samsung products they choose.”
