Up, Up, and away! Airbnb is hacking away at the concept of ordinary hotel rooms with the newly launched Icons category, transforming the fantastical into reality for its users. Among the inaugural offerings is a real-life rendition of the floating house from Disney and Pixar’s beloved film Up. This whimsical abode, located in Abiquiu, New Mexico, brings an experience straight out of the animation studio’s dreams, complete with thousands of balloons and the ability to suspend guests 50 feet in the air.

The Icons initiative by Airbnb is a bold step into pop culture, allowing guests to immerse themselves in worlds that were once confined to screens and imaginations. The Up house is a standout listing, offering a stay that is as close to the movie as possible, with Carl Fredricksen imagined as an Airbnb host. The homestay brings the colorful balloon cluster and cozy interiors put together by Carl and Ellie to life.

“I don’t always like visitors, but I guess it’s pretty nice to have them now that it’s just me and Dug,” Carl’s Airbnb description reads. “So, come stay in my cozy home I made with my dear Ellie.”

“This place used to be a dump but we fixed it up, my wonderful Ellie and me. Decorated it with stuff from all the trips we planned to take. I’m a bit old for adventure nowadays, but I know it’s still out there, especially if you stay here—but just for one night, don’t get too comfy,” Carl continues.

“Say, if you are lucky enough to stay here, you could start your own collection of badges, travel mementos, trinkets… you know, stuff to remind you of your own adventures. I suppose I could help you with that. Ellie was the best adventurer, so you’ve got big shoes to fill.”

What truly keeps this place afloat, literally, is the house actually soars above the ground. Airbnb elevates the dwelling after each stay, giving guests a truly uplifting experience.

The Up house is just the beginning. The Icons category extends far beyond the realm of animation.

As for us art enthusiasts, we’d be most recharged after drifting off to sleep in the Musée d’Orsay on the eve of the 2024 Olympics.

Airbnb’s Icons is meant to be more than just a collection of quirky lodgings; it’s a chance to step into a world you’ve only ever dreamed of inhabiting. As Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, emphasizes, the core idea behind the company is to allow people to step into someone else’s world.
“Icons take you inside worlds that only existed in your imagination—until now,” expresses Chesky. “As life becomes increasingly digital, we’re focused on bringing more magic into the real world. With Icons, we’ve created the most extraordinary experiences on Earth.”
The company plans to expand the Icons category on a rolling basis, adding more unique listings and experiences that will undoubtedly fuel our wanderlust and pop culture passions.
