KFC is counting (heh) itself lucky in the age of extra, digitally-created appendages. Embracing—or grasping—artificial intelligence’s frequent struggles of rendering hands and fingers, the Colonel is leaning into the “extrAI digits” for a hilariously fitting push for its Saucy Nuggets.
KFC, a brand synonymous with finger-lickin’ good chicken, saw an opportunity in the countless memes mocking AI’s awkward attempts at human anatomy. Partnering with advertising agency Leo Burnett, it launched its campaign alongside a not-so-subtle wink—April 20, National Cannabis Day (unofficially known as the munchies holiday). For one glorious day, a one-of-a-kind “chicken nugget dispensary pop-up shop” opened its doors in LA, satiating both the internet’s amusement and late-night cravings.
Stepping up to the plate, the fast-food chain also encouraged fans to use the built-in Meta AI generator on Instagram to dream up images with, you guessed it, more than five fingers. This cheeky play on the AI’s shortcoming rewarded participants rewarded with a sweet (and saucy) coupon for their in-app orders.
