This year’s Met Gala, abloom with the Garden of Time theme, was graced not just by A-listers but, surprise, surprise, artificial intelligence-generated spectacles too. AI deepfakes, a technology raising concerns across entertainment and art, added a curious twist to the evening.
If you saw those viral photos of Katy Perry on the red carpet and thought, “Wow, she looks incredible,” you’re certainly not the only one. Unfortunately, the image of the pop singer in a fascinating floral gown adorned with moss, in addition to one of her in a brassy corseted gown with a foliage train, isn’t real. We know this because Perry never turned up for the Met Gala.
Perry’s mother even mistook one of the AI images for a real photo, driving home the point of how convincing AI’s works can be.
Rihanna was another celebrity whose absence from the fashion event was glaring. However, a “photo” of the singer and makeup mogul in a mermaid-style gown featuring a unique circular armpiece adorned with an embroidered scene of nature’s bounty made its way online and fooled the ton.
We’re way past discerning what’s real and what’s reel. This era, it’s all about having an eye for AI.
