LEGO is dialing back the clock with its latest set, the LEGO Icons Retro Radio, designed to whisk builders away to the golden age of music in the 1950s and 1960s.

This 906-piece set combines the charm of a 1970s vintage radio with today’s technology. Builders can assemble an ornamental replica complete with a fold-up handle, antenna, classic power and tuning dials, and a sliding frequency switch.

Once assembled, the radio features a dial that can turn the sound on or off and switch between different pre-recorded sounds, enhancing the illusion that you’re operating an actual vintage radio.

For a contemporary twist, there’s a compartment at the back where a smartphone can be mounted to play your favorite tunes, adding a functional yet current element to this blast from the past.

The build itself is a trip down memory lane, offering a vibrant burst of vintage decoration and colors that make it a perfect match for any modern interior.

The radio, with its antenna in the vertical position, measures an over 12 inches high, 9 inches wide, and 2.5 inches deep, making it a substantial piece that’s sure to catch the eye—before it hits the ears.

The design of the LEGO Icons Retro Radio was inspired by LEGO fan Mehdi Rustamov, known as dimexart, who based the concept on a vintage radio from his grandfather’s house that he adored.

“The shapes, colors, materials. Everything in this little box was amazing,” Rustamov shared. He aimed to recreate the magic of that old radio, complete with working volume knobs and keypads.

It would be a dream if the brick-built radio “really makes sounds,” Rustamov continued—a detail that LEGO ended up honoring.

The LEGO Icons Retro Radio set will sing its way to LEGO Insiders on the toymaker’s website from June 1, 2024, and across LEGO Stores for everybody else on June 1, priced at US$99.99.
