In a scene that will undoubtedly go down in American history, Associated Press photographer Evan Vucci captured a dramatic image of former President Donald Trump with his fist raised and blood on his face. This powerful photo was taken moments after an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. Dubbed a “legendary American photograph” and celebrated as a pinnacle of photojournalism, Vucci’s image encapsulates a moment of high tension and resilience.
The rally began like any other, with Trump addressing his supporters. However, the atmosphere quickly turned chaotic when gunshots rang out. With his extensive background covering conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Vucci instinctively turned his camera towards the stage.
As Secret Service agents rushed to protect Trump, Vucci repositioned himself to anticipate the evacuation route. It was from this vantage point that he captured the now-iconic image of Trump standing tall, fist raised, blood streaking down his cheek.
The photographer recalled that he knew instantly what was happening, telling CNN he “went into work mode.” His experience in war zones helped him maintain his composure and focus, allowing him to document this historic moment with precision.
The picture was quickly transmitted to editors and went viral on social media, resonating with audiences globally. TIME magazine has since featured it on its cover.
Vucci described the frantic moments following the shooting, explaining how he moved to the other side of the stage, thinking it would be the evacuation route. He shared that when Trump stood up, the former President began “pumping his fists.” That’s when the photographer noticed blood streaming down the side of his face. He knew right away that he had captured a significant moment. Video footage shows Trump shouting “fight, fight, fight” as Vucci snapped the moment.
Trump later posted on Truth Social, thanking the Secret Service and law enforcers as well as detailing the incident: “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through my skin.” He described being shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of his right ear and the subsequent bleeding.
