McDonald’s has given the iconic McFlurry a fresh spin, though it’s not about the flavor swirls. The fast-food giant is rolling out a packaging overhaul that’s as kind to the planet as the dessert is to your sweet tooth.
Come September 10, the familiar plastic dome lids atop McFlurries will be a thing of the past in the US. In their place, customers will find new four-flap cups, a design already in use in places like Europe and Indonesia.
The redesign is part of McDonald’s broader commitment to source all primary guest packaging from renewable, recycled, or certified materials by the end of 2025.
Besides cutting plastic, the new four-flap design is engineered to keep the soft serve secure and easy to enjoy on the move, retaining the grab-and-go convenience of its predecessor.
Swirling alongside the packaging update, McDonald’s is introducing a Mini McFlurry option, available in classic flavors like Oreo and M&M’s, in the US for those looking for a quick treat without overindulging.
“Packaging updates like this matter,” shares Michael Gonda, SVP, Chief Impact Officer of North America for McDonald’s. “Not only is this a fun new way for our US fans to enjoy the McFlurry; we’re also moving one step closer to fulfilling our packaging and waste commitments.”
