Tesla’s all-electric Giga Train has officially hit the tracks in Germany, proving that the future of commuting might run on batteries. The sleek and sustainable train is zooming through Brandenburg with much smaller carbon footprint. The new rail line, which opened to the public on August 7, connects Erkner Station to Tesla Süd, the station at Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin.
For starters, the new travel mode is not just reserved for Tesla employees—anyone can hop on, for free. Powered by Siemens Mobility Mireo B battery-electric technology, the Giga Train has the capacity to carry 500 passengers, with 120 seats to spare. It also allows ample space for bicycles, ideal for commuters who like to cycle part of the way to work.
With its emissions-free design, the Giga Train saves an estimated 50 tons of carbon dioxide per week, offering a greener alternative to the region’s traditional diesel trains.
By easing road congestion in the region, the Giga Train also helps streamline operations at Tesla’s factory, offering a smoother route for both employees and local residents.
In addition to reducing the company’s carbon footprint, Tesla hopes the new train will improve local infrastructure and potentially slash transportation costs for its supply chain.
