A snack-stained stroke of genius has emerged on National Handwriting Day, as Cheetos debuts a font that puts the "mess" in message.
To mark this special day, the snack brand has crafted The Other Hand Font, inspired by the sticky, bright-orange fingertips left behind after indulging in a bag of Cheetos. Created by the team at Goodby Silverstein & Partners, the font was designed entirely using non-dominant hands—a playful nod to the universal struggle of snacking without making a mess.
The Other Hand Font is the latest addition to Cheetos’ Other Hand campaign, which celebrates the quirky realities of Cheeto lovers navigating life with one hand perpetually coated in dust. Over the past year, the campaign has featured various stunts, and now, Cheetos is inviting fans to take part in the fun by using the font in their everyday digital lives.
The typeface is available for free download at Cheetos.com, and those who find the most creative ways to use it—“from work, to study, to personal projects”—could have their work featured on the brand’s social media or even score an illustrative Cheetos bag inspired by the font.
“The beauty of theOther Hand campaign is that it celebrates a very real human truth: most people use their dominant to eat Cheetos, which means they have to do basically everything else in life using their Other Hand,” shares Chris Bellinger, chief creative officer of PepsiCo Foods US. “This latest stunt of introducing a hilariously bad font continues to show the mischievous —and messy—consequence of snacking on Cheetos.”
“Design is the purest form of a brand’s expression and this font embodies Cheetos like nothing we could have ever imagined. It’s a testament to the countless hours spent crafting every detail. Doing it all with our non-dominant hand was an experience we’ll never forget,” Rich Silverstein, the design agency’s founder, reflects.
Fans can have more of a taste with a new Chrome browser plug-in, which allows them to replace the typography on any website with The Other Hand Font. To install it, users can search for the extension in the Chrome Web Store or type “Cheetos” into Google to access the tool directly.
Cheetos is also running a social media initiative to encourage fans to get creative with the font. By tagging @Cheetos on Instagram or participating in the brand’s ‘Add Yours’ story template, users can enter for a chance to win the limited-edition The Other Hand Font-inspired bag of Cheetos.
For those willing to embrace the mess, The Other Hand Font offers a fun, irreverent way to celebrate both typography and the snack that inspired it.
