Desktop organizing just got a dose of fresh air as IKEA invites shoppers to take their outdoor furniture on a virtual retreat… to their computer desktops. With outdoor season in full swing, Al-Futtaim IKEA in the UAE has introduced Iconic Outdoors, a playful campaign that lets users turn their wallpapers into digital havens, furnished with miniature IKEA icons.

While setting up a real outdoor space might require some heavy lifting, transforming a desktop is as easy as downloading a few icons. Al-Futtaim IKEA and advertising agency Memac Ogilvy leaned into the irony of how  people often enjoy the beauty of nature from behind a screen. Recognizing that many desktops already feature breathtaking landscapes, the brand decided to take its outdoor selection indoors and, more specifically, behind the screen.

The campaign, accessible on the furniture giant’s website, offers a full range of downloadable icons representing hundreds of IKEA outdoor products. By following a tutorial, visitors can replace their standard folder icons and arrange them over scenic backgrounds, assembling their virtual spaces in the same way they might style a real garden, balcony, or patio to make them feel more like home.

To demonstrate, IKEA decorated stunning photographs of a desert campout, a beach, and a grassy field to showcase the versatility of its outdoor pieces.

Further, the company uploaded the icons to GIPHY, allowing users to build the furniture into their Instagram Stories. A new challenge encouraged customers to create their dream outdoor setups on social media, with three winners having their designs displayed on digital screens in IKEA stores.

Once your desktop is set up like a dream retreat, though, IKEA has one final message: don’t forget to step away from the screen and enjoy the real outdoors.
