45 years after making history, Black Barbie is stepping back into the spotlight—this time in a show-stopping scarlet gown. Mattel is marking the milestone with a special-edition doll that pays tribute to the 1980 original and its designer, Kitty Black Perkins, whose influence helped shape Barbie’s legacy of inclusivity.
The Black Barbie 45th Anniversary Doll stays true to the elegance and style of its predecessor, with a touch of modern sophistication. The 13-inch figure rocks cascading curls, a deep complexion, and a sweeping red chiffon and satin gown with a sweetheart neckline. A golden cuff bracelet and matching red heels complete the look, while glossy mauve lips elevate her glamor.
All this is a nod to the timelessness of Perkins’ vision, which challenged industry norms and gave young Black girls a doll that truly represented them.

Kitty Black Perkins, a leading designer at Mattel in the late 1970s, was instrumental in diversifying Barbie’s look. Her work on the first Black Barbie, released in 1980, was a direct response to the need for better representation in toys.
At a time when most Black dolls were side characters rather than main figures, Perkins made sure Black Barbie was a star in her own right, not just an accessory. The anniversary release, standing as both a collector’s piece and a cultural statement, acknowledges the far-reaching impact of her efforts—as well as the work still ahead—in ensuring that every child sees themselves represented in the toys they love.
The Black Barbie 45th Anniversary Doll carries a US$35 price tag, and is now available through Mattel and major retailers such as Target.
