Turning 50 is a milestone that often invites reminiscing, but Microsoft is hitting ‘Start’ on the occasion with a clear message: the past matters, but the future is still under construction. Partnering with brand and digital studio Koto, the tech giant has launched a vibrant anniversary campaign that doesn’t just look back, but it also aims to energize the makers, builders, and dreamers of what’s still to come.
Rather than centering on retrospective fanfare, the campaign introduces a visual identity that’s as forward-leaning as it is rooted in history.

At its core is the theme “Change needs makers,” a tagline that threads through the entire identity system. This ethos is brought to life through three compositional structures—Worlds, Iconic Moments, and Then & Now—each showcasing how Microsoft’s legacy tools and innovations continue to influence creators across generations.
Visually, the nostalgic campaign merges retro aesthetics with modern design. A reimagined anniversary logo nods to the original Windows brandmark, updated with motion and dimensionality to keep it grounded in today’s digital landscape. Gradients inspired by legacy color palettes infuse energy into the visuals, while Segoe Sans Display anchors the typography in both familiarity and motion. The system is envisioned not just to celebrate the past, but to also inspire what comes next.

Artifacts play a central role, from nostalgic cues like the first versions of Windows, MSN, Clippy, and the launch of Xbox to newer entries like Copilot, Minecraft, and Microsoft’s artificial intelligence platforms. These elements are treated as cultural touchstones—proof points of how Microsoft’s tools have been embedded in the fabric of personal and professional life around the world now and then.

Beyond design, the campaign reaches nearly every facet of Microsoft’s communication strategy. From digital activations and PR outreach to internal branding and the official 50th celebration event on April 4, the identity system flexes across platforms.
