Ken might be Barbie’s forever plus-one, but now he’s dunking into new territory. Mattel is giving the iconic doll a full-court press makeover by teaming up with the LeBron James Family Foundation to launch the first-ever Ken modeled after a real professional athlete. LeBron James, a name synonymous with basketball excellence and community impact, will soon appear in doll form as the first ‘Kenbassador’—complete with signature style, thoughtful symbolism, and a philanthropic edge.
The collaboration marks a new chapter for Barbie, especially as the franchise rides the wave of renewed popularity following the 2023 movie. Adults have become the fastest-growing group in the toy market, and this collector’s edition reflects a shift in how Barbie and Ken are being positioned: as cultural figures as much as childhood staples. Ahead of Ken’s 65th anniversary in 2026, the brand is spotlighting individuals who champion change and inspire young people—AKA Kenbassadors.

James’ doll comes decked out in custom streetwear that he helped design himself. Dressed in a varsity jacket decorated with patches that reference his life and legacy—like an Ohio nod, his iconic jersey number, and the ‘We Are Family’ logo of his foundation—the doll also sports a ‘I Promise’ wristband and accessories from brands like Nike and Beats.

And taller than the standard Ken and sold in larger packaging, the figure mirrors the basketball star’s physical presence and influence.

"As a young kid, I was fortunate to have role models who not only inspired me but also showed me what’s possible through hard work and dedication,” recalls James. “Now, as an adult, I understand how vital it is for young people to have positive figures to look up to,” he adds.

“That’s why partnering with Barbie to release the LeBron James Kenbassadors doll is such an honor. It’s an opportunity to recognize the powerful impact of role models who instill confidence, inspire dreams, and show kids that they, too, can achieve greatness.”

A portion of the collaboration benefits the LeBron James Family Foundation, which provides support services in Akron, Ohio across education, housing, health, and job training. As part of the release, Mattel is also donating up to 5,000 copies of James’ children’s book I Am More Than to Save the Children when the doll is purchased through Target between April 14 and 19.

For fans eager to get their hands on the collectible early, a limited release—some signed by the star—will drop at the UNDEFEATED store on La Brea in Los Angeles on April 12. The Barbie Signature LeBron James Kenbassadors doll officially launches April 14 for US$75 at Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Mattel Creations. Needless to say, Ken’s got a new MVP.
