‘VSCO Capture’ Launches As Free App That Shoots Like A Film Camera In Real-Time

VSCO is placing the idea of focusing on the moment under a different lens. The company’s standalone photography app Capture, now available globally, invites creators to stop snapping and editing on autopilot and instead re-engage with the art of intentional shooting.

Akin to a film camera in your pocket, VSCO Capture takes VSCO’s signature vintage-inspired filters and applies them directly to the viewfinder in real-time. Users can now shoot photos with presets like ‘Kodak Portra’ and ‘Fuji Provia’ already layered in, eliminating the need to edit after the fact.

The app includes 58 free presets, along with ‘Bloom’ and ‘Halation’ effects that soften edges and add a film-like glow, enhancing the sense of mood before the shutter clicks.

Beyond the filter, the iOS app includes a range of manual controls such as shutter speed, exposure compensation, and flash settings. There’s also support for RAW and ProRAW formats, allowing for greater flexibility in post-processing.

For those who prefer the camera to do the work, auto mode is still available, but the real draw lies in the ability to treat every shot as a finished product in the making.

Photos taken in Capture sync automatically with the original VSCO app, where creators can refine their images further or publish them to their personal feed. The editing pipeline is non-destructive, meaning original files are preserved even after presets are applied. A VSCO account is required, but unlike other apps banking on subscription models, Capture remains entirely free to use.
