When it comes to holiday cheer, IKEA has gone maximalist, and this time it comes with a side of meatballs. The Swedish furniture giant has paired up with Stockholm designer Gustaf Westman for a limited-edition capsule that folds playful design into its annual VINTERFINT winter range.
Westman, who made his name with chunky mirrors and candy-colored interiors, is stepping into mass retail for the first time, and the result is a 12-piece collection that makes holiday décor feel more like everyday fun.

Unveiled on Tuesday, the line includes porcelain plates, oversized cups with saucers, spiral vases, candleholders, and small lamps, all rendered in Westman’s signature curves and saturated palette.

Aptly, the highlight is a porcelain plate designed to hold exactly 11 Swedish meatballs. The tongue-in-cheek yet practical piece anchors the collection with a wink to IKEA’s most famous dish and Swedish culinary heritage, and it even comes with an instruction leaflet as a wink to the brand’s flatpack nature.

Color plays a starring role across the array. Traditional reds and greens are paired with bubblegum pinks and soft blues, giving the pieces a versatility that stretches beyond seasonal use. Westman has drawn on personal memory in shaping the collection—an oversized saucer, for example, echoes his grandmother’s holiday spreads, while a doughnut-shaped lantern twists open to mimic orbital forms.

These touches ground the whimsical aesthetic in stories that feel intimate yet accessible.

And while Westman’s studio furniture normally sells for hundreds of dollars, these pieces are priced between US$7 and US$25, with most items staying under US$50 depending on the market, therefore keeping true to IKEA’s democratic design ethos. That affordability didn’t come without adjustments: thicknesses were slimmed, functional holes were added, and flat-packing dictated final tweaks. Yet the pieces retain their sculptural charm, managing to balance IKEA’s efficiency with Westman’s sense of humor.

Distribution is limited and staggered, with the collection rolling out globally through September and reaching US stores around October 1.
