Last year, Appleannounced it would be introducing a self-service repair program, with other technology giants including Samsung and Google following suit in an encouraging sign for the right-to-repair movement.
Now, the service is finally available to iPhone users in the US, where customers can purchase genuine parts and tools to fix their own devices instead of forking out hefty fees to authorized retailers.
According to the brand, it will first be trialing the new program stateside, with plans to expand into Europe later this year.
Got a broken Apple device? Simply head to the online store to search through over 200 individual parts and tools to fix your iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone SE, with everything you need for stitching up a wonky display, battery, or even camera.
In the near future, the company will release manuals, parts, and tools for customers to perform repairs on their Mac computers from the comfort of their home.
If you’re on the fence about the repair works, don’t fret. Apple has said that every genuine part undergoes “extensive testing to ensure the highest quality, safety, and reliability,” and pledged that the ones for sale to customers are the same as those made available to authorized repair retailers.
Even better, for certain components, you may receive a credit in return for sending in the replaced part for recycling.
For those who don’t have the tools available at home, the brand is selling them together with the parts, such as torque drivers, repair trays, displays, and battery presses, that have been custom-made to “provide the best repairs for Apple products.”
Plus, if you’re only going to use these tools once, you’ll be able to rent them for US$49 in a kit rather than purchase them individually, so you can fix up your devices with less hassle.
