Google Joins Apple & Samsung In Giving Users Supplies To Fix Their Own Phones

Following in the footsteps of Apple and Samsung, Google has now joined in the self-repair movement to allow users to fix their own Pixel smartphones.

Partnering with iFixit, Google will be releasing genuine spare parts for the Pixel 2 through Pixel 6 Pro later this year, which can be purchased by customers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and the EU. 

According to a press statement, the company says the parts will comprise the full range needed to repair a Pixel device, including batteries, replacement displays, cameras, and more. 

The parts will be available individually, if only one part of your phone is damaged, or can be combined into iFixit Fix Kits which will come with screwdrivers and spudgers so you can create your own workshop at home. 

For those who wish to leave it to an expert, Google has already partnered with 750 independent repair locations across the US and Canada, along with walk-in providers in Germany, Japan, and the UK. 

In order to promote repairs and longevity of devices, the technology giant says it will be committing to at least five years of security updates for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, so you can get more years out of the same hardware. 

“When we built the first Pixel phone just five years ago, we made a commitment to design our hardware products in a way that’s sustainable and puts our customer first,” reveals Ana Corrales, Chief Operating Officer of Consumer Hardware.

“There’s more to do, including expanding our repair network and improving repairability across out products. We look forward to sharing more as we make progress on this promise,” she adds.
