With so many places to see, things to eat, and life-changing experiences awaiting people to grasp by the hands, planning a trip can sometimes be the hardest step to take. Eager travelers often face a mountain of choices when deciding which flights to take, which hotels to stay, and how to jam in every possible attraction in a new city in one week.
Expedia is trying to end vacation-planning anxiety by placing none other than OpenAI’s ChatGPT right into its iOS app to act as a travel agent. The chatbot will advise on anything you can ask, whether that be the best places to stay, how to get around a city, and activities you can participate in.
The system will be able to assess conversations and even save hotels discussed so bookers can return later to review.
ChatGPT was first introduced to Expedia as a plugin for its site, where it could do the same for browser users.
“We view this as a really interesting capability to make the shopping experience, the discovery experience, easier for certain people who want to use natural language,” notes Expedia CEO Peter Kern. “It may not be for everybody, it may not be for all of our consumers. We don’t know yet.”
Eventually, the company hopes to expand the chatbot to Android phones and other languages.
In other travel planning news, Google has introduced a new ‘Price Guarantee’ scheme to its Google Flights feature, which will scan for the lowest price flights and even pay users back if something cheaper comes up later.
