Android Can Craft Your Texts & Generate Wallpapers On Demand With AI
So, Siri sends your texts for you when you have your hands full and can only dictate your messages. Android will do you one better. It can make you seem more interesting behind the screen… and also make your screen more interesting, thanks to the sweeping phenomenon that is generative artificial intelligence.
At its recent I/O conference, Google paraded how the exciting world of image and text generation can be harnessed in a variety of ways. The tech giant recently teased a glimpse of the possibilities under its Arts and Culture division, where it released casual games powered by AI-created art. This time, the company showed off how these tools can make smartphones smarter by co-writing your texts and creating wallpapers unique to you.

A possible game-changer will be ‘Magic Compose’, which can rewrite your text messages in your desired tone. Do you spend hours agonizing over how to reply someone? You can now conceal your anxiety by getting the AI to make your messages “sound” more relaxed, happier, more excited, and so on.
Looking for some drama instead? ‘Shakespeare’ appears to be a viable option too.

Magic Compose can be activated by tapping a magic wand icon in Google’s messaging app. In addition to helping you set the mood of a message, it can also suggest responses based on the context of a text. The feature seems to work a lot like Grammarly’s generative AI assistant, GrammarlyGO, which can also edit bodies of text to match a desired voice.
Magic Compose will first be available in beta this summer. As for whether the recipient of your AI-assisted correspondence will know you’ve had help, there won’t be a label of shame, so to speak. Dave Burke, vice president of engineering for Android, explains that all the AI does is edit your message, which you still can vet afterward, and that the “human is in the loop.”

Arriving this fall on Android is a new Generative AI Wallpaper option to design a lock screen that’s completely yours. Simply tap ‘create a wallpaper with AI’ and select from a variety of text prompts—like ‘Surrealist’ and ‘City by the Bay’—and you’ll receive an original image to dress up your tech in an instant.

Then, analyzing your fresh new lock screen, your phone will update the rest of its UI with a matching color palette.
The system is trained on public domain images, ensuring that your resulting wallpaper won’t infringe on anyone’s copyright.

Coming even earlier—next month, to be exact—are customized ‘Emoji’ and ‘Cinematic’ wallpapers for Pixel devices.
You can create your own emoji wallpaper by choosing your favorite emojis and a color, which prompts the AI to churn out a background comprising those. Meanwhile, you can generate a cinematic wallpaper by picking a photo; when the AI processes it, it will turn it into a “3D image” with a parallax effect.
“Our bold and responsible approach to AI can unlock people’s creativity and potential. We also want to make sure this helpfulness reaches as many people as possible. We do that through our computing platforms like Android,” details Google CEO Sundar Pichai. “And today we shared how advancements in AI can make your phone even more personal.”
