Google Search Welcomes New ‘Perspective’ Tab For Social Media, Forum Posts
By Alexa Heah, 11 May 2023
In March, Google added new features to Search to make it easier for users to verify information found online. Now, the technology giant is updating its 25-year-old function further by adding a brand-new ‘Perspectives’ tab.
According to the company, this addition will allow users to view an aggregate of “long- and short-form videos, images, and written posts” that have been shared on discussion boards, forums, and social media platforms on topics that “would benefit from others’ experiences.”
Some of these suggestions may appear as a carousel at the top of particular search results, in a similar standalone box as the ‘Top Stories’ module. This move comes as Google hopes to “transform” itself through artificial intelligence (AI).
However, Engadget pointed out that the added tab may hit the same snags previous trials have encountered. For example, when the company trialed the ‘Popular on Twitter’ module, misinformation on breaking news events, such as mass shootings, was shown to users.
Nonetheless, the ‘Perspective’ tab will offer more information on the content creators behind the posts, including their name, profile picture, and popularity, which would allow users to decide if to trust the information put out by these sources.
