Remember those viral short videos from years back that seemed unassuming at first, only for ghouls to flash their faces right at the end and scare you off your computer seat? As it seems, clips of that genre aren’t welcome in 2018.
YouTube has taken down a six-second teaser for The Nun that has been deemed too terrifying. The clip shows an iPhone volume control being lowered, spurring confused viewers to amp up their device’s volume. As they did so, ‘Valak the Demon Nun’ would jump out with a scream.
Even though the ad only lasted for several seconds, it had appeared before videos wholly unrelated to horror, and did not come with any ‘skip’ button, leaving viewers with no choice but to sit through the screening.
Victims who had the misfortune of encountering ‘Valak’ on their screens expressed on Twitter that the jump-scare nearly gave them a “heart attack.”
User ‘bbydvas’ tweeted the caution, “WARNING! If you see an ad on YouTube with the volume sign being turned down and nothing else, IT’S A JUMP-SCARE for the new Nun movie coming out.”
“I advise you [to] look away and/or turn down the volume if you have anxiety or just straight up hate jump-scares, [please retweet] to save a life.”
The tweet prompted YouTube to remove the ad as it “violate[d] [its] shocking policy.”
According to the video platform, advertisers should “avoid offending or shocking users.” Content that violates this policy includes “gruesome imagery” and “promotions that are likely to shock or scare.”
The Nun is poised to arrive in theaters on 7 September 2018, and has been described by Warner Bros. Studios as “the darkest chapter in The Conjuring universe.”
Thrill-seekers can still enjoy the deleted spot, as it has been re-uploaded by third-party YouTube channels. Watch it below.

I really don't wanna use an adblocker for youtube because I know I support my favorite youtubers with the ads. But since I'm really not good with horror movies, bc they cause me sleepless nights, I see myself forced to use one until YouTube takes down that The Nun jumpscare ad.— ~ Julia ~ (@RawSammy) August 12, 2018
Appreciate you bringing this to our attention! This ad violates our shocking content policy and it's no longer running as an ad. More info here: https://t.co/dOUocjUevh— Team YouTube (@TeamYouTube) August 14, 2018
