A moment of silence for our fallen hero—English actor Henry Cavill is apparently hanging up his Superman cape.
The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which cited sources close to Warner Bros. Studio.
It seems that after meetings to discuss a cameo in DC superhero film Shazam! were canceled due to scheduling issues, the company has been slinking away from the Superman narrative.
With Cavill being cast as the lead for Netflix’s adaptation of the The Witcher novels, the studio is also apparently paving way for a Supergirl film, which is said to be an origin story.
Since Cavill’s character would have been an infant in this timeline, it would negate the need for an actor of his age to play the role.
Fans might be disappointed to learn that it could take “at least several years” before Warner Bros. Studio rolls out another solo Superman movie, since it’s set its sights on Supergirl.
If it does decide to follow through with the Superman franchise, however, Black Panther’s Michael B. Jordan could be one of the actors in line for the lead role, according to another report by Deadline.
Such changes would also allow for the company to “reset” its direction on the DC extended universe, such as spotlighting more colored people. “There’s a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work,” said one insider.
