Disturbing ‘Joker’ Trailer Draws Similarities To Martin Scorsese’s ‘Taxi Driver’
By Izza Sofia, 05 Apr 2019
The first look at the Joker film has set the pop culture world ablaze, partly because it has drawn comparisons with another iconic film.
The trailer received a whole lot of praise, with fans noticing that it has strong connections with Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Taxi Driver stars Robert De Niro, who plays the character of a young discharged US Marine named ‘Travis Bickle’. De Niro is also part of the cast of Phillips’ Joker and plays a talk show host.
Additionally, the footage carries similar aesthetics to another Scorsese x De Niro classic, The King of Comedy.
Joaquin Phoenix is portrayed as ‘Joker’ in the upcoming film, which follows a failed stand-up comedian who is slowly seduced into ‘Gotham’s’ criminal realm from the early 1980s. Director Todd Phillips described the film to surround a “beloved character with no definitive origin.”
The teaser shows Phoenix as ‘Arthur Fleck’ and looking rather skinny while taking care of his sick mother. The character also reveals that his purpose in life is to bring laughter and joy. However, the trailer ends with Phoenix in his notorious ‘Joker’ form.
Joker drops in theaters on 4 October. See side-by-sides of its trailer versus Taxi Driver below.
