If you cannot order a burger at McDonald’s without having it with fries, that’s probably because you can’t get enough of the world’s supposed all-time favorite fast food menu item.
As reported by Reader’s Digest, via Aol, McDonald’s golden, crisp French fries are apparently the most popular fast food item in all of history.
It cites NBC News that the Golden Arches are the biggest buyer of potatoes in the world, and goes through over 3.4 billion pounds of US-grown spuds each year. 69 million diners are being fed in the US alone every day, which accounts for a daily consumption of nine million pounds of potatoes.
Additionally, McDonald’s fries continue to be the chain’s most popular offering, according to HowStuffWorks. This ranking is possibly helped by the fact that the fries accompany almost every McDonald’s meal.
The nostalgia brought about by these recognizable fries might factor into their popularity, as they were introduced 70 years ago in 1949. They no longer retain their price of US$0.10 a pop, unfortunately.
As for the secret behind that iconic taste, some believe it’s an extra layer of sugar on fresh-cut potatoes that not only give them their golden sheen, but also balances the savoriness of the added salt with some sweetness.
Others think the fries’ success is owed to an artificial beef flavoring that was developed after McDonald’s switched to using vegetable oil instead of trans fat-laden beef fat.
Now that the world seems to be transitioning into going meat-free, McDonald’s fries might rise in popularity again. However, it’s worth noting that since its artificial beef flavoring is made with hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk, McDonald’s golden spuds aren’t vegan or gluten-free.
