Gucci Is Under Fire For Culturally Appropriating Turban And Pricing It At US$800
By Yimin Huang, 16 May 2019
Gucci is selling what looks like its take on Sikh turbans. Called the ‘Indy Full Turban’, the piece is priced at almost US$800 on premium retailer Nordstrom.
In response to the design, the Sikh Coalition, an advocacy organization, has voiced its opposition to the profiteering of a religious symbol as fashion.
In a statement to NBC News, the Sikh Coalition explains, “The turban is not just a fashion accessory to monetize, but a religious article of faith that millions of Sikhs around the world view as sacred.”
The turban, also called dastaar, is a common headpiece worn by Sikh people as a symbol of their faith.
Sikhs on social media have also ridiculed the hefty price tag of the Gucci turban, stating that it is easy to get complementary turbans after going for free crafting lessons.
This is not the first time Gucci has been accused of cultural appropriation of the Sikh community. It first got flak for featuring the headpiece in a runway show during Milan Fashion Week last year.
Currently, the turbans are sold out on the Nordstrom online site, or could have been taken down in light of the controversy.

One of the reasons Sikhs wear turbans is to promote equality. It is insulting to first simplify our religion into a fashion accessory and secondly sell it for hundreds of dollars. The wrap of the turban is done in Sikhi style, this is not cultural but #ReligiousAppropriation.— Kash Singh (@kash_education) May 15, 2019
A Sikh Turban is not just a piece of cloth. It carries immense values, respect, a courageous history, lots and lots of expectations. Dear @gucci, never try to rate Our Pride ...Our Turban. It is Priceless. Thanks @RaviSinghKA for initiating this free service. Stay blessed Sir.— BALWINDER SINGH (@balsin90) May 15, 2019
