Humans have been revering cats for millenniums. Now, felines have yet again become a muse, this time for a font.
The new font was created for Smalls, a New York-based subscription service dishing out high-protein natural cat food. Miles Barretto, lead designer of the business, meticulously crafted the resource to evoke the “playfulness” of cats.
Barretto worked upon Oslo-based Good Type Foundry’s ‘Adieu’ sans serif typeface to create the cheeky ‘Adieu Smalls’ uppercase font, which he envisioned to “create alternate characters that would surprise and delight,” he told Design Week.
To put the font together, the designer observed cats and their everyday movements. Notably, ‘Adieu Smalls’ takes its greatest inspiration from the way cats “use their body as a form of communication,” he explained.
Elements of “playfulness” can be found in the wiggly ‘M’ and ‘O’ glyphs. The font also draws upon the cat tail, which creates a “slight hook” at its tip “when a cat is interested,” Baretto described.
Similarly, the ‘U’ and ‘E’ have been given the “cat tail” treatment at their ascenders and descenders.
The same “playfulness” and movement can be seen on Smalls’ refreshed packaging, flouting conventions of regular cat food, as well as the brand’s new print zine called Small Talk Magazine that will arrive with customers’ subscription boxes.
