A tasteless tweet dished out by a pizza chain in commemoration of the September 11 attacks is at the center of criticism.
Ledo Pizza shared a now-deleted picture of a square pizza, the trademark shape of its pies, decorated with olives and pepperoni to resemble the American flag.
“#NeverForget,” the pizzeria captioned its photo.
Ledo Pizza later realized the pushback it could have faced for the “tribute” and promptly took it down. It then replaced the pizza photo with one of an actual American flag.
Twitter users, however, had already seen the previous tweet, and shared screenshots of the flag-themed pizza post.
Ledo Pizza has since apologized for the insensitive dedication, writing that it never intended to “diminish the gravity” of the attacks. It has also defended that it repeatedly uses the same image during American holidays and days of remembrance “to show our Patroitism and Love for our country.”
While the pizza chain explains that “most fans” would be familiar with the pizza flag imagery, the company has learned that using it for the tragedy was a “misstep,” and asks social media users for their forgiveness.
Why did you delete the pizza? Did you want us to...forget? pic.twitter.com/5I7jdAeEFp— The Jeopardy Bridesmaid (@JakeMHS) September 11, 2019
Sir this appears to be more than 50 olives and only 10 stripes. Did you count properly? pic.twitter.com/nENJRqRisa— Ben K. (@benyankee) September 11, 2019
This morning, Ledo Pizza posted a photo of a pizza decorated as a flag of the United States of America on Twitter. As you may know, we regularly use this photo to show our Patriotism and Love for our country during holidays and remembrances.— Ledo Pizza (@LedoPizza) September 11, 2019
While most fans are used to seeing this photo and share our Patriotism, a few Twitter users took offense to this imagery and for this we are sincerely sorry. Our Twitter post was never intended to diminish the gravity of September 11th and has since been removed.— Ledo Pizza (@LedoPizza) September 11, 2019
Again, if you are familiar with Ledo Pizza, you know that we would never intentionally do anything to dishonor our flag and we hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive us for this misstep. #WeAreSincerelySorry— Ledo Pizza (@LedoPizza) September 11, 2019
