Aquaman star Jason Momoa shared an Instagram video showcasing a moment between him and a grizzly bear, which animal rights organization PETA has called out as a “sad stunt.”
The organization claimed that Momoa’s involvement with utilizing a bear for his brand new Apple TV+ show, See, simply disregards the horrible treatment captive animals go through for the sake of filming.
E! Online reported that Momoa, who stars as Baba Voss in the new series, had to get close to a grizzly bear as his character required him to fight against one. The series apparently used an actual bear to film the scene, and Momoa decided to bond with the bear in an unconventional way.
The 43-year-old shared during his interview on Apple Music’s Beats 1 that he wanted to build mutual trust with the creature, so he decided to put an Oreo cookie in his mouth and invite the bear to eat directly from his mouth.
“It was a Kodiak bear. It stood nine-foot tall,” he said, adding that the grizzly bear would make its appearance in the second episode. “You have to get it slowly close to you, and be able to interact with it,” he elaborated.
After the release of the series, Momoa shared the moment between man and bear on Instagram, and PETA was quick to retaliate to the post.
On Twitter, the organization declared, “In a sad stunt, a captive bear ate a cookie out of actor Jason Momoa's mouth.”
PETA explained that bears used for entertainment are “often torn from their mothers as infants, beat, and forced to perform,” before requesting Momoa not to “promote the wild animal exploitation in the future.”
It also published an official statement criticizing Momoa for his act.
The press release emphasized that captive animals are subjected to “food deprivation, beatings, electric shocks, and chaining” in order for them to perform for films and television shows.
Momoa has not responded to PETA’s statement or tweets. The offending video can be found below.

Please, Jason, don’t promote wild animal exploitation in the future. https://t.co/byY79PrKwR
The bear was apparently provided by notorious exhibitor Steve Martin's Working Wildlife, which has been cited numerous times by the USDA for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act for failing to provide adequate vet care, locking up primates up to 18 hours a day, & more.— PETA (@peta) November 2, 2019
Momoa knows how lifelike CGI, animatronics, & other cutting-edge technologies are, but subjecting a bear to the bright lights & bustle of a production set is stressful & totally outdated.— PETA (@peta) November 2, 2019
PETA urges the actor to consider compassion & refuse work with wild animals going forward.
