A group of reality TV stars turned Instagram influencers have been duped into promoting a fake diet drink laced with cyanide.
The prank was carried out by the BBC as part a TV show called Blindboy Undestroys the World, which is hosted by Irish comedian Blindboy Boatclub. The program aims to expose celebrities who probably do not use the products they endorse.
This time, influencers Lauren Goodger, Mike Hassini and Zara Holland were part of the investigation. The three were secretly filmed in a staged audition to be the brand ambassador of ‘Cyanora’, the made-up drink.
Blindboy Boatclub pointed out later that the team had been transparent about the product, which “was clearly labeled [with] hydrogen cyanide” and insinuated it was capable of killing anyone who consumed the beverage.
The subjects were also told that they would not be able to try ‘Cyanora’ themselves before agreeing to work with the brand. This, however, did not stop them from promoting the drink on their platforms, even mentioning hydrogen cyanide in the ad.
“From what I know, that all looks pretty natural,” Hassini said of the drink.
Goodger chose to film alongside her manager, who confessed that she never tried the ‘Skinny Coffee’ product she had advertised to her followers on Instagram.
However, Goodger defended her choice in promoting ‘Cyanora’, stating that she was given the script at that “precise moment” and simply said “what they [wanted] to hear.” She added that “no deals were signed” following the audition.
Goodger explained that she agreed to advertising the drink “in the heat of the moment,” and clarified that she would not promote “anything that contains poison.”
Zara Holland initially took up the offer, but her promoters interjected it, reminding that she had to sample the drink before promoting it.
