Samsung could be revolutionizing the way people use smartphones and tablets by killing the need for onscreen keyboards.
While virtual keyboards were introduced in place of physical keypads for easier communication outdoors, tech brands have witnessed that people require so much more nowadays, such as the ability to edit documents and compose emails. For these purposes, onscreen keyboards are just clumsy and oftentimes too tiny, whereas an additional keyboard brings added weight.
Samsung has thus introduced what should be the lightest keyboard in the world. It’s SelfieType—“the keyboardless keyboard.” The AI software, developed by the South Korean tech giant’s incubation program C-Lab, only requires two things: an RGB, front-facing camera from your smartphone, tablet or laptop, and yourself.
SelfieType analyzes your finger movements and translates them into QWERTY keyboard inputs on your device, creating a user-friendly yet lightweight typing solution.
At present, SelfieType is in testing and works well as an English-language keyboard, but its creators are hoping to expand its use across languages in the near future. In addition, Samsung is working on making SelfieType customizable to users’ individual typing styles.
The “invisible keyboard” was demonstrated at CES 2020 for the purpose of getting feedback on improving its functionality. “We want to see SelfieType shock the world!” the team described in a press release.
