A group of tourists made themselves a little too comfortable at Peru’s famous Machu Picchu, and now face prosecution and deportation.
According to a report by The Guardian, Peruvian authorities are deporting five visitors, and prosecuting another, after the group vandalized stonework of the Incan citadel and defecated among its ruins.
The tourists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and France trespassed into the ruins of the Unesco World Heritage site and knocked down a rock from a wall of the Temple of the Sun.
One of the visitors, an Argentinian man, will be remaining in Peru to be prosecuted for “destroying Peru’s cultural heritage” after taking ownership of the stunt.
Another tourist purportedly defecated along the ruins of the Machu Picchu.
The site’s ancient stonework has mystified visitors for years, but growing tourism numbers have threatened its preservation.
5 tourists were deported to Bolivia for causing damage to Machu Picchu, and banned from Peru for 15 years.
