Microsoft is learning to push alll the right buttons with the Proteus Controller for Xbox, a highly customizable gamepad designed specifically for accessibility.
For many gamers with physical disabilities, traditional controllers can present a significant barrier to enjoying their favorite hobby. Now, they can bring their A-game. Developed in collaboration with peripherals company ByoWave under the Designed for Xbox program, the Proteus Controller brings a full spectrum of customization. It’s built in with several small, magnetic cubes that house buttons, D-pads, and analog sticks, and can be arranged in a wide variety of configurations.

This “snap-and-play” design allows players to build their own gaming solution, adapting to unique physical disabilities or simply customizing their experience to their liking and comfort. Setups can range from one-handed fixes to complex, multi-part arrangements that can be mounted on wheelchairs, for gamers with limited dexterity. There are over 100 million possible configurations, thanks to a combination of interchangeable parts and LED options. Additionally, the included large, single-button peripherals offer another layer of accessibility.

Extensive research and testing by hundreds of disabled gamers worldwide has led the controller to where it is today. It even picked up awards such as the Engineers Ireland Innovative Graduate Engineer of the Year and the Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Impact Award, and was named among the top 20 best young inventions by the James Dyson Award in 2022.
Separately, Microsoft is also rolling out an update for the existing Xbox Adaptive Controller, another great option for gamers with disabilities, which will expand the device’s functionality by allowing it to connect to more accessories through its USB ports.
The Proteus Controller is priced at US$255 for early pre-orders, increasing to US$299 later. This modular innovation empowers players with a level of control over their gaming experience. With wireless connectivity and compatibility across Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Windows 10, and Windows 11, the Proteus Controller opens the door to a wider world of gaming for those who may have previously found it challenging.
